And Everything Nice

"The project is meant to raise the awareness of such a ridiculous
standard, and to question its morality"

And Everything Nice, is a project by Hannah Altram. She is a photography student from Pittsburgh, she created this project that started in her college dorm room, and became viral after publishing it on her Tumblr account. It is an analysis of the standard for female beauty. The ongoing series consists of women in states of affliction, the body fluid of the models have been replaced with glitter to visualise the concept of girls invariably needing to seem attractive regardless of the actual situation. Of all the photos in the series, Hannah does not favour one over another. She recognises how each image shows a different reaction towards every viewer. For Hannah, the project 'represents progress in the way we talk about physical appearance and gender expectations.'

I really like the idea of this project, Hannah understood how girls feel and showed this in her work. The idea that whatever the actual situation, girls still want to look good, when really that should be the least of their worries. This project shows how the pressure that girls experience to be attractive regardless of what might actually be happening. It's a pictorial representation of the unreasonable standard of female beauty. I like the use of glitter in place of any fluids, something so girly and pretty showing contrast. The glitter almost making the images easier to look at, and less vulgar.

I feel this work links well with my own, as both show how women feel they need to look, to become the 'standard beautiful woman' of today. I like how she wasn't afraid to show some more gruesome things, and show the reality of women and girls today.

'Women are not, her title implies, made of sugar and spice, and they're certainly not made of glitter.'
