The problem is we don’t know what the meaning of these are because the medium shifts everything, and best way is to have your own opinion and where you place your own photography.

Mark Power: 

  • Discovered a homemade enlarger, an upturned flower pit, a domestic light bulb and a camera lens. 
  • Editorial work for charity
  • 1992 began making his own projects
  • 2002 joined magnum.
  • Project: Shipping forecast, released in book form. BBC Radio 4 has the shipping forecast, of various locations in England and Greenland ect. 
  • He was interested in listening and imagining it in his head, so went and photographed these places. His images show the imagery he had as a child and the reality of it. 

Richard Avedon – The American west. 

  • Documented the American west at the time
  • Portraits
  • Location shoots, put a white background on a building but used natural light throughout all of his images
  • His work shows consistency

Alec Soth: Sleeping by the Mississippi, and Niagara Falls 

  • Work about heart break, love, ect
  • Calls himself a realist 
  • His writings on photography are nice read.

Don McCullan: 


  • Shot homeless people in London
  • Conflict photographer 


Anthony Luvera 




  • Started working in a soup kitchen
  • He asked the homeless people how they wanted themselves to be represented in the images, allowed them to do the images. He was assistance for them.

  • Don’t show stereotypes that we would think off.


Larry Sultan: The Valley

  • The valley is a place behind Hollywood.
  • Has a seedy representation
  • Houses rented out for people to film porn, and he would go in and photograph the houses and around them.
